Dr. Sonia Hernandez
Sonia Hernandez, DVM, Ph.D.

UGA wildlife disease expert Sonia Hernandez will wrap up the inaugural year of the One Health @ UGA Lecture Series by addressing the One Health implications of urbanization on wildlife health. Her talk, titled “Urbanization and Wildlife: Why should people care?,” begins at 1:30 p.m. in Room 175 of the Coverdell Center.

Sonia Hernandez, DVM, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of wildlife disease with a joint appointment in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and the College of Veterinary Medicine/Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study. She received her DVM from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (1996), and Ph.D. at UGA’s Odum School of Ecology (2008).

Hernandez’s research revolves around how human activities affect the health and disease dynamics of wildlife populations. Current or recent projects include: basic ecology of the pygmy hippo, transmitter effects on sturgeon, antimicrobial resistance of fecal bacteria of Tokay geckos, the effects of domestic cats on urban wildlife, pathogens of urban white ibises, the effects of mercury and PCB’s on least terns and Salmonella wildlife surveillance.

The One Health @ UGA Lectures Series aims to highlight efforts at UGA and the Southeast focused on interdisciplinary teaching and learning, research, and outreach at the nexus of human, animal and ecological health.  It is supported by the BHSI Division of One Health.
