CURO-BHSI Expansion Pilot Program
For this academic year 2010-2011, the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) has partnered with both the Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute (BHSI) to create a new pilot program aimed at providing greater access to students and faculty interested in taking advantage of all the opportunities available for undergraduate research at UGA.
Why is CURO expanding?
The Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) is positioned in its tenth year to share best practices with other UGA units. In order to maintain the position of national leadership in undergraduate research, CURO must provide greater access for students and faculty.
The CURO Expansion program, an initiative of the UGA Provost for Academic Affairs, has two overarching goals: (1) increase undergraduate research credit hours and (2) expand access for students with a grade point average below the 3.4 required for Honors research courses through CURO.
To this point, CURO has concentrated on efforts to facilitate academic credit research opportunities for students with a minimum 3.4 GPA. Expansion of CURO includes extending access for academic credit to students who do not meet the 3.4 minimum GPA and increasing the number of faculty who participate in CURO. This expansion will allow faculty to supervise undergraduate research for academic credit with those students whom they want to mentor, regardless of GPA.
