UGA Neuroscience Spring Symposium to be held April 20

The UGA Neuroscience Student Association and the Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute’s Neuroscience Ph.D. Program will be hosting the 2012 Neuroscience Spring Symposium on April 20 from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the Paul D. Coverdell Center Auditorium, Room 175.

The symposium is open to anyone with a vested interest in neuroscience at UGA and aims to showcase the nature and scope of student and faculty research in the field, which currently spans 15 departments in six schools and colleges across campus.

At 3:00 p.m., guest speaker Shelley Hooks, associate professor of pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences in the College of Pharmacy, will discuss her work examining the molecular mechanisms by which bioactive lipid signaling pathways regulate early neural development.  The title of her talk will be “G-protein coupled receptor expression and function in human neural stem cells.”

A round of “Data Blitz” oral presentations will follow at 4:00 p.m. Participants in this event provide a brief presentation of their current research in 10 minutes and 10 PowerPoint slides. Interested faculty and students are invited to participate and share their current projects.

The symposium will conclude with a reception in the Coverdell Center lobby and rotunda at 5:00 p.m.
