Grad Students, Post Docs invited to annual GSPS Research Day, Aug. 14

The University of Georgia Graduate Students and Postdocs in Science (GSPS) will hold its fifth annual Scientific Research Day on Wed. August 14 at the Paul D. Coverdell Center and Veterinary Sciences Main Building on South Campus.

This free, interdisciplinary event will feature presentations by graduate students and postdoctoral associates from the University of Georgia research community. Dr. David E. Clapham, Aldo R. Castenada Professor of Cardiovascular Research at Children’s Hospital Boston, Professor of Neurobiology and Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator.

Dr. Clapham was trained in electrical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and his postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute in Goettingen, Germany. After several years on the faculty at the Mayo Clinic, he moved to Children’s Hospital in Boston, where he directs cardiovascular research at Children’s Hospital and is Professor of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Clapham is an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Presentations and talks will take place in Room 175 of the Coverdell Center. Keynote speaker Dr. Clapman will present in the main auditorium of the College of Veterinary Sciences Building across the street on D.W. Brooks Drive.

Cash prizes will be presented to the best oral and poster presentations. The abstract submission deadline for poster or oral presentations is Mon. August, 5th.

Created in early 2009, GSPS provides a forum for graduate students and postdoctoral associates at UGA to prepare for science careers through professional development and networking opportunities.  The organization has 314 members representing 30 departments and seven schools/colleges at UGA.  In addition to its annual research day, GSPS organizes a yearly career symposium and hosts regular open forums addressing topics ranging from balancing family and career goals to finding postdoctoral fellowships.
