What we do …

At BTSI, our goal is to better understand, diagnose, prevent, and treat disease. We do this through research collaborations across a wide network of disciplinary expertise, training the next generation of scientists and health professionals, and supporting discovery of new technologies for diagnosis and treatment.

Fostering Multidisciplinary Collaboration

BTSI connects UGA biomedical and translational researchers to support development of multidisciplinary teams that work to advance therapies, technologies, and approaches to improve health. The institute fosters collaborations across campus, between members of the Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance, and more broadly across the state and nationally. To help foster community, BTSI offers a collaboration matchmaking system developed by the UGA Office of Research that allows for discovery of UGA colleagues with interests and abilities that align with members’ research programs.

Advancing biomedical discoveries, approaches, and innovations to improve health

BTSI works with faculty and other innovators to translate discoveries, therapies, technologies, and approaches to improve health through the Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Alliance. The BTSI One Health program works at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health. BTSI One Health is an important partner in UGA’s Precision One Health initiative that combines One Health and Precision Medicine to advance innovative treatments for disease and improve health and health research.

Training the biomedical and translational workforce and the next generation of researchers

BTSI is the home of UGA’s doctoral program in Neuroscience and the gateway to master’s and certificate programs in clinical and translational science. It also links UGA to the Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance, supporting biomedical training through TL1 (pre-/post-docs) and KL2 (early career) mentored training grants, as well as providing mentoring and training in multidisciplinary science and team management to researchers at all stages.
